Being part of something great
Meet Jarrad Dixon, one of our Theatre Porters at Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital. Jarrad joined us just over 6 months ago, after learning about the relationships Nuffield Health have across the community, such as our flagship programmes and the links we have with local sports teams. Jarrad tells us what life is like working at Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital.
Tell us about the team you work in?
In addition to my main duties, I also do odd jobs here and there, taking me to almost all theatre environment locations. This means I tend to see most, if not all of the team each day. What I’ve noticed at Nuffield Plymouth is all the theatre staff have a good, working relationship with one another, harmoniously coming together to ensure the patients have a comfortable and enjoyable experience during their stay. From team leaders, all the way to recovery practitioners, everyone recognises the importance of being able to work cohesively. These sentiments have been echoed by not only patients during their feedback once their journey with us finishes, but this Nuffield Health site has been recognised as a quality provider by an awarding body on more than one occasion, none of which would be possible without the fantastic people who work here, striving to make sure we can all achieve the pinnacle of excellence.
Why did you choose to work at Nuffield Health?
I’ve never strayed too far from the healthcare environment so that was a start. I think what enticed me most about working here is seeing the relationships they’ve established across the community, such as flagship programmes for championing patients through long covid, 12-week physio rehab for post op patients, and they have links to local sports teams which is quite interesting.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Nuffield Health?
While there is technically a hierarchy within the hospital with regards to positions, you wouldn’t know it when working here. There is a lot of interprofessional working within teams and the lines are blurred but in a good way, as everyone is helping out with a plethora of tasks and responsibilities. Even the senior management team aren’t afraid to get stuck in with the clinical side of things too, and they help me out from time to time, which I can’t fault.
What is your career highlight/s?
Maybe a bit of an anomaly, but as this is my first full time position, the career highlight has been everything I’ve achieved so far. Settling in and feeling very welcomed is an aspect I have enjoyed a lot as it has shown me what it is like to be part of something greater than yourself. I’ve been able to grasp entirely new concepts quickly, as well as gain further understanding of how a theatre environment works and what actually the ins and outs of a patient’s journey can be. This will be something I definitely take forward as it has at least given me the base knowledge of what it means to have a career, particularly in the beginning.
How do you use your employee benefits?
At least three times a week, I will use the gym facilities at the leisure centre located just next door in order to maintain good physical health.
